The International Laser Class Association in England has selected Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron to host the Laser Radial Men’s World Championship and the Laser Radial Youth World Championship in 2012 following a strong Australia-wide bidding process.

RQYS, based at Manly in Queensland, will hold both Championships on Moreton Bay. The Club was thrilled to win the bid, as it plays a major part in supporting the growth of sailing in Australia.

“It’s a huge honour to be selected to host any world championship, particularly a Laser Radial world championship, as the Laser boasts the largest fleet of boats in the world, Suellen Hurling, the Club’s marine sports manager said.

“There will be over 300 young adults coming for the Youth World’s event from every corner of the globe.”

The RQYS has produced several world champions as well as gold and silver medallists at the 1973 Olympics and 2008 Paralympic Games.

More recently, Mat Belcher of the RQYS won the 470 Men’s World Championship with his Beijing gold medallist crew Malcolm Page. They are one of the favourites for the Gold at the 2012 Olympic Games.

“We are to dinghy racing what Las Vegas is to gambling. We are pleased to be able to showcase what we have on offer here at Moreton Bay to the rest of the world,” Paul Hughes, General Manager, RQYS said.

The World Laser Radial Men’s and Laser Radial Youth Championships are predicted to attract over 300 entrants from around the world to each event.
