About the Club

The Brisbane 18 Footer's Sailing Club was established in 1921 and the club has been sailing on the Brisbane River ever since. Today, the Club is noted for re-introducing skiff sailing to the "non-sponsored" sailor. Their "Classic 18" is based on the typical Farr design of the 1970's. The club sails on the weekends between September and Easter.

Last season we had a small number of classic 18's sailing and decided a Qld championship. The "Classic" 18 is the type of boat that started at our club with Ben-Bob Lexcen-Miller's world Champion in 1961 and came to an end when the big wings came along. I hope some time in the future to codify a set of rules so that new boats of this type can be built. It probably takes more time and money to restore an old boat than to build a new one. Look at the Historic 18's. We claim Peter Cavill's "Jenny" Historic and Mick Reids "Dulux" Sharpie 18 as our own but they only come out for particular regatta's. Our fleet of Historic 10 Footers is now the largest and most regularly raced. The club now owns 4 Corsairs and we are going to try and get fleet racing going for them next season. We still have the remnants of our once all conquering Sabot fleet and are hoping to revitalize our Junior division next season with this class. We recently purchased a set of second hand station moulds to enable the construction of foam Sabots. The club also owns several 125's with which I am planning an All Boat Intermediate division for next season utilising VYC yardstick type handicapping for the dinghy classes and we are eyeing off the possibilities of starting regular keelboat racing in the river.

We also have a small number of Powerboats in their own Division, which is also a member of Qld Small Craft Council and in recent years our active membership has swelled with the Brisbane River Dragons - Dragons Abreast Crews that we now accommodate.
